Boring Google basics still win

Hi Reader,

Taylor posted a very simple reminder on LinkedIn a few weeks ago.

Check your Google Business Profile and go through your reviews.

If you're not happy with them, or perhaps don't have enough, make it easier for your clients to leave feedback.

His exact template was:

"{name}, thanks for being such an awesome partner to us. Do you mind doing one more thing to be even MORE awesome and leave us an honest google review? Here's the link: {link}"

Nothing fancy. Just ask!

The boring stuff still matters

For B2B service businesses, people still Google you before they call. They will check your website. Check your reviews. Check your LinkedIn profile, whether you're active, and vaguely alive. So I've put together a 4 things you should check - and shouldn't take more than 1 hour to do!

Start with your Google Business Profile

Google says that complete and accurate Business Profile information makes you more likely to show up in relevant local results. Hint: and also LLMs.

Here's a quick checklist:

  • Check your business name, category, website link, phone number, and services
  • Update your hours if they are wrong
  • Add recent photos
  • Copy your review request link
  • Give Taylor's template to anyone on your team who speaks to clients
  • Ask them to send it after good client interactions this week
  • Reply to any recent reviews

One important note is to ask for "honest" reviews. Don't offer incentives. Google is very clear that paying, discounting, or bribing people for reviews is not allowed. (Not sure how they'll find out, but I think we know Google is always listening...)

Google Search Console

I'm sure you have integrated Google Search Console into your site, but when was the last time you checked it?

Go ahead and do that, because if you didn't know, Google has recently (as in beginning of June 2026) rolled out new features in Google Search Console for Generative AI results.

Here's a quick checklist to run through:

  • Can Google find your site?
  • Can it crawl your important pages?
  • Are there indexing issues?
  • Which queries are bringing people to you?
  • Which pages are showing up but not getting clicked?

The goal here is to make sure everything is running smoothly and able to be indexed and found by Google. If the latest Google AI updates are anything to go by, more and more search features relating to AI search will be added to Google Search Console.

Lastly, Google Analytics

I know. GA4 is mess of a platform and sometimes difficult to find what you're looking for. But it is the source of truth when it comes to who is visiting your website.

So check the basics:

  • Is GA4 installed?
  • Is it firing on the right pages?
  • Are your contact and book-a-call actions tracked?
  • Is at least one meaningful key event set up?
  • Can you tell which channels are creating real enquiries?

And if you need any help with this, you know where to find me. :)

The boring checklist

This work is like your annual car service. You don't have to service your car every year, but doing so saves you a lot of pain and money in the long run.

So here is your boring checklist. Send it to your agency, marketing intern, or if you have to do it yourself, call us rather. 😉😉

  • Update your Google Business Profile
  • Ask for Google reviews
  • Check your Google Search Console and the new AI features
  • Check your Google Analytics and your key events

See you next week.

Taylor Jackson snuck in here while Jason wasn't looking last time. He's still in the GE gulag, so I am taking the podium next. Two years in, and they finally handed me the keys. Jason's probably going to regret this. Hi everyone 👋 My name is Marli, and I've been with Growth Experts for a while now. So why am I writing this newsletter today for you to read? Because I’m going to let you in on something cool. Because I know you and I can be cool like that Reader. Marketing is a pretty consistent...

Hi Reader, Yesterday, somebody reached out to me who I haven't spoken to in over three years. They were finally ready to start talking about marketing for their business. THREE YEARS after our first conversation… (Firstly, good luck to me trying to attribute the lead source in our CRM on this one. Do I create a new deal, or resurrect the old deal with all the notes?! 🫠) The thing that got to me about this, and why I also made a video on it, is around understanding timing. I can't plan for...

Hi Reader, the riches are in the niches. We’ve all heard this many times, me included, yet I’m still marketing my own business way too broadly and wonder why I don’t have a Ferrari* parked in my driveway (yet). How I’ve picked “niches” before I would take our client list, see which industry they were in, consider if I’d like a lot more of those businesses as clients, and then go off and create content and landing pages targeting that industry. The big problem was this was WAY TOO BROAD. Like...
